When Is a Radiation Survey Required for an Ohio Cabinet X-Ray?

Survey triggers

OAC 3701:1-68-06(E) requires radiation-area surveys and recorded results:

1. upon installation of the equipment;
2. during maintenance, calibration, and other procedures when the procedures require the presence of a primary beam; and
3. when visual inspection reveals an abnormal condition in the cabinet system.

What this means for service work

A cabinet X-ray survey should not be treated only as a one-time commissioning document. The facility's radiation protection program should identify the events that trigger another survey and preserve the resulting record.

Not every service visit necessarily creates the same survey trigger; the work performed matters.

Related emission criterion

Ohio limits radiation emitted from a cabinet system to 4.4 microgray (0.5 milliroentgen) in one hour at any point five centimeters outside the external surface.
